Some more pictures from my urban trip

Minneapolis is a pleasant city, with skyscrapers that are not only made of big, rectangular boxes. There is some variety. At the back, the Foshay tower, named after a businessman from the town, that was some time ago the highest one.

Minneapolis downtown

Sculpture Garden in Minneapolis is a kind of openair exhibition of modern art sculptures and is located slightly off downtown, to the west, in Loring Park, between the Walker Art Center (of which it constitutes the external extension) and the basilica of St. Mary.

This piece of art showing a cherry in a spoon has become one of the most famous views of the city.

Minneapolis is built on the banks of the Mississipi river (that can be seen here) and owes part of its wealth to the mill industry. It was one of the largest mill centres of the USA.
This industry, that was situated on both banks of the flow, has lost of its importance since then, and these industrial scenes remain, whereof some have been pleasantly brought back to life thanks to the conversion of these industrial buildings into appartments.

Downtown Chicago is very pleasant and reunites various architectural styles. Shown here the Wrigley building (named after the family that establisehed the company with the same name... You know, the chewing gums) and the Tribune tower (one of the largest daily newspapers), on the Northern edge of the Loop.
It is possible to walk from there into North State Street, where all luxury shops are concentrated, taking you to John Hancock Center (and its observatory), Lincoln Park and the Chicago History Museum.

The Wrigley building in Chicago

It is one of the most widely used picture to illustrate Chicago : its famous theatre, located downtown, in the Loop.

We are here in Lincoln Park's marina, in the northern area of the city. At the back of the picture, the cgaracteristic building of the John Hancock Center, the second highest one in town, after the Sears (ex-Willis) Tower.

Chicago by night, seen from Navy Pier, that is now a large recreation area, very close from Ohio Street beach. There is always something going on and the attractions remain open quite late every day.

Navy Pier

It is one of the most popular sports in the USA, along with base-ball, basket-ball and hockey : (american) football.
All matches are an opportunity to party with the whole family or with friends and are almost all the time sold out. Here, this was a game between the Chicago Bears and the Cardinals, in Soldier Field.

Detroit's history will not be acurate without talking about the car industry. The city has been for a long time the capital of this industry, hometown of Ford, General Motors, ...
Even if, nowadays, there does not remain that much here (only GM has kept its worldwide headquarters in Detroit), some signs can still be seen at places in town. Here détails of a fresco in a metro station.
